More Things to Do Before You Move

While there are literally hundreds of things to do before you move, packing takes up at least 50 of them.

But before you can do any of the packing you will need to go through all your stuff and decide what you don’t want to pack. These are things that are now of no use to you for one reason or another.

It could be simply clothes or toys the kids have grown out of or sporting equipment that you no longer have a use for. Or maybe you are moving to a hotter climate from a cold one and won’t need those warm jumpers or doonas any more.

How to get rid of surplus goods

While it is possible to have a garage sale, this takes time to arrange and you have to be there for a whole weekend to put stuff out, sell it and pack up what didn’t sell. It may be easier to sell your unwanted goods on places like Gumtree or eBay, especially if you have an iPhone and can do it basically on the run. If you choose this route, start at least three weeks ahead of your moving date as things don’t always sell quickly.

Keep the prices reasonable. Some people have an overrated idea of the value of their things, which stems from the fact that they used to love them. Other people are not emotionally involved – yet – and so won’t want to pay too much. They shop at such places to get a bargain.

What else you need to do

Apart from getting rid of surplus goods, what else is there to do before moving? Change your address to the new location. This may not be quite as quick and easy as it sounds, depending on your lifestyle. There may be many places that will need your new address:-

  • Magazine or newspaper subscriptions
  • Insurance
  • Car registration
  • Banks
  • Utilities, if you are staying in the same city
  • Credit cards
  • Drivers licence
  • Online places such as Amazon or Paypal

Taking care of mail

You will also need to see the Post Office about forwarding your mail for a certain period of time after you move. This will catch anyone that you forgot to let know and you will be able to contact them with your new address.

Getting utilities cancelled

When you let utilities know of your new address, you will also need to arrange a cut off date for the old and a start date for the new. This is easy enough in the same city, but if you are moving some distance you will need to find out who the new providers are. Your real estate agent should be able to help.
